I have put aside the various assemblies and have concentrated on the hub itself, and shorn of its discs I have attempted to clean the engrained black crud from the wheel rim and hub. Once cleaned, I located the filler plug in centre of the hub between the spokes, and extracted about a tablespoon of black oil. I refilled with 10-40 oil and in one day 2-3 tablespoons of oil seeped out from the large circular oil seal, and worryingly also from the central bearing. Now I know that a certain level of incontinence was normal with these hubs, and I also have drastically over filled it, but that does seem excessive, I am also not sure what level of resistance to rotation is normal. Accordingly I contacted an expert, who has the tools and experience, and have decided to pass the renewal and possible refurbishment on to him. This will entail stripping the wheel (which I would have to do anyway as the spokes are rusty), so that the hub can be heated to aid its dismantlement. I intend to re spoke it myself on a ‘Taveners jig’ with stainless spokes using the ‘yoke’ as my final truing rig,( because a conventional truing stand that uses a static spindle would obviously not work). In preparation for this, I cleaned and prepped the yoke in rust treatment and red oxide. I will also take a set of pictures and notes of the spoke arrangement, for respoking is one job I have never attempted before.
